The Dreaded Vocabulary Words

So, this year I started something new–vocabulary words, and they cannot stand them. They have to write two different definitions on the first day, two synonyms and one antonym on the second day, and on the third day (as their test), they have to write a five- to seven-word sentence with each vocabulary word. In doing this it shows me that they understand what the word means.

Well, today, vocabulary was frustrating because several of the words had no synonym or antonym listed. To further impress upon them the importance of knowing a word, we worked together with their definitions to find synonyms and antonyms for those words. Another proud Mom moment, when I had been told several times today “We hate vocabulary,” my son pipes up and says, “Wow, I didn’t realize one word had so many different ways to say it.”

Even though vocabulary is here to stay, and several more times I may hear  how much they hate it, I will know that with each hate, they are also teeming with more and more knowledge. I’m fine with that! 🙂

Happy Homeschooling!
